Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisari) is located on the European shore of the Bosphorus, thus the name meaning “Fortress on the Land of the Romans.” It was built by the order of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror/Fatih Sultan Mehmed) by the narrowest point of the Bosphorus in 1452 before the conquest of Istanbul. It was completed in as short a time as 4 months to prevent attacks and block aids from the north of the Bosphorus and Black Sea during the siege. It is located opposite of Anadolu Fortress (Anadolu Hisari), built by Sultan I Beyazıt in 1394. There are 3 large towers, 1 small tower and 13 smaller towers in Rumeli Fortress.
Its highly scenic setting overlooking Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, which connects Europe and Asia, makes Istanbul’s magnificent view even more unique. Rumeli Fortress is one of the unforgettable parts of Istanbul’s skyline.
