Offering a magnificent scenery, Pierre Loti Hill on the ridges of the Golden Horn is another landmark of Istanbul. The Hill takes its name from the impressionist French author, Pierre Loti, who fell in love with Istanbul after his first visit in 1876 as a navy officer. Unlike most Europeans of those years, he became a resident of Eyup, came to this hill and gained the respectability of the local. While watching this splendid view and sipping his coffee, Loti wrote his semi-autobiographical novel, Aziyade, which tells the story of a love affair with a young harem girl named Aziyade. Because of his sympathy to the Ottomans, his name was given to the hill, street and cafes overlooking the Golden Horn.
