Istiklal Street (Istiklal Caddesi) is a very popular pedestrianized street in Beyoglu district; 1.4 kilometers long from Taksim Square to the Tunnel. Historically known as the Grand Avenue of Pera and Grand Rue de Pera in French and Cadde-i Kebir in Ottoman Turkish. With the declaration of the Republic on 29 October 1923, the street was named as İstiklal (meaning independence) to commemorate the triumph of Turkish War of Independence.
It is visited by nearly 3 million people every day. There are lots of attractions on the street, such as Galatasaray Museum, Beyoglu Fish Market (Balik Pazari), Flower Passage (Cicek Pasaji) and the Tunnel (Tunel). There are also historically significant buildings, such as several Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian churches, some synagogues and mosques and consulates of several nations.
